Re: Strange My Documents redirection issue

And please check the system and application logs on the server and workstation to see if anything gets logged when the policy fails.

First, folder redirection is controlled via group policy. The SBS wizard just creates the policy in the background. So, with that in mind, it is important that you are adding users via the SBS wizard. Otherwise the user will not be in the appropriate OU and, bam, different results.

What is more intriguing to me is that there are multiple *different* group policies defining folder redirection. I'd have expected to see a user that was added incorrectly to just not have folder redirection at all....where files go the C drive of the *workstation*, not the server. This would lead me to suspect that somebody has been doing other 'manual' changes on the server without the wizards as well...which can wreak havoc without some serious expertise.

As far as diagnosing the exact problem, I'd recommend using the group policy results wizard in the GPMC console. You can run it against a remote machine and the remote user with the problem. That will show you which policies are being applied and which folder redirection policy is 'winning' if there is a conflict. Once you've determined the what, you can either adjust the group policy or move the user to an appropriate OU so the winning policy changes. Without knowing more details about your OU structure and the group policies in play, that is as specific as I dare get.

I have all users redirecting thier my documents folders to a share on the F
partition of the server. Set it up years ago and it works fine except for one
new user. For some strange reason that folder is going to the default folder
on the C drive of the server? I checked the F partition and the user has a
folder where it should be. The default my pictures, my music, etc folders are
there but nothing else. I've googled this to death, looked at permissions and
begun to tear my hair out. Any help or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. Server is SBS 2k3 Prem. SP2 all updated except for this week's
patch. User is on XP pro sp2 box and was added to this computer as a new user.

Thanks
Chuck
