Re: Temperature Monitor / Server Shutdown

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Chad,

Thanks for the suggestion, very helpful. In this case the motherboard in
question doesn't seem to have any MIB's available so will need to look at
other options for the temperature sensing. IPSentry looks interesting, will
look into this further.

I note that Win2003 ships with installable SMTP and WMI SNMP Provider, I
wonder if would installing either of these be of any use?

Hi Nick -

There is a very good chance that the motherboard's temp reading is
published via SNMP. If you can download MIBs for your specific
motherboard, you can import those in to a monitoring application that
supports SNMP. For a standalone server, I'd recommend taking a look at
IPSentry (has a free 30 day trial). It can monitor SNMP devices and
generate a variety of alerts (e.g. if it passes the upper temp threshold
you've set, it can send you an email and text message, then fire a script
to shutdown the server . . .

Just my $0.02

Dave,

The mobo does have a shutdown facility built into the BIOS but this is
primarily designed to protect the cpu and motherboard. The minimum this
can be set to is 50degC by which time our RAID array would have fried
themselves.

APC makes a line called NetBotz that does environmental monitoring, etc.
Quite expensive, but unfortunately the only thing I'm aware of other
than what Les already mentioned.

I'll also second Les's comment about the motherboard manufacturer. What
you're looking for is supported on the run-of-the-mill Intel motherboard
on my home desktop (in conjunction with a little software app they
provide), so I'd assume it would be common on server boards.

What brand is it? Typically the mainboard manufacturer would be the
place to go for an app to monitor the hardware.

Thanks Les, but this is not a Dell and I cannot justify changing the
server purely to solve this problem.

Some servers (probably most brand name) have on-board sensors, with
configurable alerts and actions. I know Dell the best, and their
server administrator app can do this.

Hi All,

As our Server is now in a small air-conditioned room I need to find
a way to shut it down if the air-conditioning fails, being a small
room it will obviously warm up quite quickly. I originally thought
about writing some software to run as a service on the server and
monitor the onboard LM75 sensor but have not been able to find any
method of reading from this.

Does anyone know of a network connected temperature monitoring
device which can send a 'Shutdown -s' to each server in the event of
an overheating situation or any other solution?

Cheers,
Nick
