Re: Internal SQL Server Problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

thank you Cris, that's a much more constructive thought than mine.

A thought in Brian's defence about the CPU: Core2Duo is 2 cores (or is it 4?) @1.8, giving something close to 3.6. IMHO it _should_ be sufficient (whether it is or not is a different question). I think things such as FSB frequency, RAM and HDD speed are more important.

What you got away with in SBS 03 is no indication of what you can "get away with" in SBS 08
That fact that your hard drive is "pounding"...this is called hard drive thrashing
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/disk_thrashing.html
"In systems that use virtual memory, the resulting condition of a hard drive being used excessively for virtual memory because the physical memory (i.e., RAM) is full. (The process of moving data into and out of virtual memory also is called swapping pages.) Disk thrashing considerably slows down the performance of a system because data has to be transferred back and forth from the hard drive to the physical memory.
A sure sign that your computer is thrashing is when an application stops responding but the disk drive light keeps blinking on and off. Thrashing is generally caused by too many processes competing for scarce memory resources. To temporarily stop thrashing, you need to terminate one or more applications. To stop it permanently, you need to install more main memory.

Disk thrashing can result in permanent failure of the hard drive; as the data is transferred back and forth, the hard drive’s read/write heads are subjected to considerable wear and tear."

Back in the days when MS first released it's Flight Simulator program, the minium specs were a 486/66Mhz cpu...did it run, yes, did it perform well...no...hated it.

That's exactly what's going on here.

Secondly, your processor, albeit Core2Duo does not meet the minimum speed of 2.0 GHz, you stated it's 1.83.

If you want this system to behave more appropriately, you need to seriously re-think your hardware specs. Otherwise you're in for a very unpleasant experience and probably early hardware failure.

OK, those specs get by but...

4GB is MS _minimum_ for SBS08.

That is based on what Microsoft considers a typical SBS installation.
Two client computers, wireless networking, two printers, and a shared
folder is well below what Microsoft considers typical.

For years, we've run SBS 2003 server with a great deal of success on a
very modest laptop. It is *below* the minimum hardware standards for
SBS 2003.

At this point, there is no indication the problem is hardware related.

I think the MS minimum for XP was about
256MB, ever tried to run that?

I have.

Still, I am surprised that the activity interfered enough to be
bothersome during the installation process. I don't have anything to
offer beyond this

I do thank you for taking the time to reply.
