Re: Moving SBS2003 from a Dell PC to HP Proliant ML310 G5 Tower Se

What about Frank's question about is this OEM licensing on the Dell? For the
RAID its really best to use a hardware rather than software RAID solution.

OK,

This was my original thought on how I was going to do it, before I decided
to seek wisdom from those who know more than me on this issue.

1. Build the server with same name, same domain, same IP address.
2. Pull the network cables off the client workstations
3. Put the new server online
4. Do the restore using NT Backup
5. Test out thesuccess or otherwise with my laptop which I would have
already joined to the domain (we do have a user account on the server)
6. If that works fine, then connect the workstations, one at a time, log
off
and log back on.

I intended taking the Dell PC off-line and keep it safe just in case as
this
is an upgrade and not a disaster recovery situation.

I thank you guys for the wealth of information. I think that I will risk
the
exmerge route (just have to read up on it - plus I got you guys there in
case
it goes pear shaped, plus I still have the old Dell box to fall back
on).

They are close for the holidays and not due back till the New Year. I am
going in Tuesday morning to put in the new Server. So guys, please keep
channels open and listen out for loud screams.

There are two hard drives in the Dell box - C and D. D is used purely for
storing user data and is backed up as well. I use NT Backup and do a daily
backup of both system state and user data.

As for the raid issue, I appreciate the suggestion. I will ask for an
additional hard drive once they are back from the holidays would use
either
the Windows or HP software to RAID the hard drives.

I just think that the exmerge route would be both educating and
challenging.
One can do with extra knowledge. All I ask is for you guys to be there.

If any of you guys can point me in direction of a good read-up on using
exmerge, I'll be most grateful.

I will let everyone know how I get on on Tuesday.

Kindest regards to all,

Duke
