Re: SBS 2008 / Dynamic DNS

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

It's almost a certaintly that your inbound port 25 is blocked and outbound
is limited to your ISP smart host.

You'll need to redirect your inbound mail to another port that isn't blocked
or change to a pop puller method.

Port 80 is as likely blocked and you really shouldn't need or want that.
HTTPS (443), RDP (3389), and the RWW default (4125) port used to connect to
workstations and servers remotely should be OK but not quaranteed.

Yes I have a domain. its mydomain.ie
The ISP i use to host my website have an mx record for me now that is
mydomain.ie which "points to" mydomain.dnydnsalias.com

So I have the A record pointing to my public IP. this is being
managed by dnydns.

So I think i'm all set from that side. dnsstuff tests have said the
MX piece is ok.
Its just that I can't receive email to user@xxxxxxxxxxxx I can send
though. Although I'm sending through my DSL ISP's smtp server.

hope this makes things clearly.
thanks to all who've replied.

this is setting up the proper DNS records
You need an A record which points to your public IP. This is
usually something like domainname.dyndns.com
You need an MX record which then points mail to the A record
information. Once those records are setup it can take up 72 hours
for that information to propogate worldwide.
You have a registered domain name, correct?

No. Where I am broadband business connection is not availabe. It
sucks.

I have worked my way through the wizards.

I can now send email but not receive it.

Think it might be due to the naf router i have. It claims i can port
forward. I've set up the usual ports (80, 25, 443) to foward to my
servers internal IP.

The setup is not tough
The better approach is, as you go through the wizards on the To Do
list, and
you run into a question, ask the specific question.

Is Broadband Cable business connection not available to you?

Yes its a consumer grade DSL. I can't get a business grade DSL
connection
where I am as my dsl provider has informed me that the line
signal is not
strong enough. Trouble is i need to use SBS 2008 for my work. So
i'm caught
between the proverbial rock and hard place.

Thanks for the google demo...... Lol.
I started there and found dyndns which I figured would be just the
trick.
However I was just wondering how the SBS 2008 configuration piece
works.
Hence the question.
thanks again

The first question is, is this a "home" or "consumer" grade DSL.
If so,
it's very likely that you would be violating the terms of
service of the
ISP
by connecting any server which provides services out over their
connection
such as email, web, RWW,etc.

I have an SBS 2008 Server behind a DSL link that can only avail
of a dynamic
IP from the ISP.

Anyone know how to set up SBS 2008 with Dynamic DNS ?
