RE: Installation Failure, Critical Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (KB940357)

Hello David,

Thanks for your post.

Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

You received error message that "Setup encountered an error: This update
can only be installed on Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2" when trying
to install KB940357 for your SBS 2003 server.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

First of all, let's check the current version of your SBS server. Please
try the following steps:

1. Right click on My Computer and check the system version from its
prosperities, is it "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Windows Small
Business Server Service Pack 2"?
2. On the SBS Server Management console, click the Home Page, can you see
the "Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2" logo picture on the top of the
panel?
3. Can you see "Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2" in the Add/Remove
programs list?
4. Can you see "Update Services" in the SBS Server Management console?

If all of the answers are "yes", then R2 should be installed.

However, based on my research of the error messages, the error 0xf0f4 in
the update log means PREREQUISITE_FAILED and the CheckAutoapproveExistance
returned value is 0x2 which is Not Equal To 0x0. Therefore, I would like to
confirm that:

1. Are you using WSUS 3.0 to download/install new updates? Or using the
WSUS 2.0 which is a part of R2 Technologies?
2. Are the updates configured for "Auto-Approve for Detection"?

Therefore, please first make sure you are using WSUS 2.0 which installed
with R2, not WSUS 3.0. Second, please make sure Auto-Approve feature is
turned off because this update need to modify the Autoapprove.exe process.

After checking the above configuration, if you are using WSUS 2.0 and the
update still cannot be installed correctly, I suggest we try again to
reinstall SBS 2003 R2 Technologies since all the error message indicated
the current system is not R2 version or R2 has not been fully installed.
Please follow the below TechNet articles to reinstall R2.
