Re: SBS 2003 new cannot send email

Thanks for the quick response Merv.

Since Outlook Express works on the server -- without authentication
--- and even with INCORRECT authentication --- doens't that indicate
that the server should not need authentication to send via the mail
server?

I used mail.bellsouth.net in both the Outlook Express test, and in the
Connector.

Bellsouth may require authentication for outbound mail.  See SMARTHOST and

And instead of mail.bellsouth.net in the SMTP Connector (or in CEICW), use
that mail server's IP address in brackets:  [207.115.11.17].  Authentication
may or may not be required for outbound mail.

More info - this computer is the first in my life to use the POP mail
connector and I assume therefore I never should tell it to "Use
Exchange" in the ICEW . So I didn't.

I wonder if that is the "gotcha"?

Kinda confused on this one. Brand new SBS2003 install cannot email out
at all via Exchange. Have changed the Connector to deliver first with
mail.bellsouth.net the when that failed allowing the server to deliver
with DNS but neither work. Of course have run the IECEW .

CAN however email out with Outlook Express on the server using
mail.bellsouth.net unauthenticated, and also authenticated (with
incorrect password, just to see if they care. They don't care).

Have enabled logging for the SMTP However, does not create the
SMTPSVC logfile folder in C:\WINDOWS\System32\LogFiles. Almost like
the SMTP service is not installed?? I THINK THIS MIGHT BE A HINT?

Can telnet on port 25 to mail.bellsouth.net so I know I am getting
there. Obviously since the server can use MSIMN.exe to email out
either unauth or auth.

Any ideas? This server has never worked to send email (I mentioned it
is brand new). It does deliver internally, just not out to the
internet.

Have run the ICEW or whatever, twice.

Can telnet on port 25 to mail.bellsouth.net so I know I am getting
there. Obviously since the server can use MSIMN.exe to email out
either unauth or auth. But the messages just sit in the queue until
they time out ( have set timeouts to 3 minutes so I don't have to wait
too long..)

I have racked my brain on this one. any ideas? Thanks in advance- Hide quoted text -
