Re: Backup Question from total ignoramus

IMHO, Depending on the size of the size of company and data he needs backed
up really will determine whether tape backup is indeed the best or not.
For smaller companies with no IT staff (secretary Janet is responsible for
changing the tapes, taking a tape home, rotating properly, and making sure
the backups are indeed working) I believe online backup is the way to go.
Prices have come down considerably. And of course it depends on internet
connection.
Cons-initial backup may take a while but there are companies that will send
a physical hard drive if data is too big.
-if alot of data could get very pricey.

Pros-
-set it and forget it well sort of. Check for companies that offer to send
backup reports via email.
-with versioning you can go back quite some time for restore
-can access files online from any location

Of course if you go this way there are things you want to make sure the
provider provides (encryption for example).

So I'm a very new account rep for an IT company. I have a new client
with a small office to whom we are recommending a tape drive for backing
up his files (exchange, imaging, dispatch software) as he's currently
not backing up squat.

He's looking for cheaper options and threw out backing up to an
external hard drive or online/offsite backup. What's the pros/cons here
and why is the tape drive best? He has smb 2003 and will use the backup
software from there and will not buy symantec backup software by the
way.

Thanks!
