Hi!
I am having an issue with a POP3 Connector within an SBS2003 (non R2) setup. The server is running for two users - user1 and user2. User2 uses POP3 for email retrieval only and then synchronises the emails into the user's Exchange store for backup purposes. This functionality is perfectly well functioning.
As for user1, there is a somewhat different situation. Here, since the SBS POP3 Connector has a minimum retrieval interval ofo 15 minutes, user1 needs to be able to retrieve emails on demand. Hence, the setup has been made as follows for user1:
POP3 Connector connects to the POP3 account at the ISP and retrieves any emails that are stored there, then deletes them from the POP3-account at the ISP. The Message Delivery component of the POP3 Connector then routes the messages to a mapped user mailbox. The user mailbox chosen in the POP3 Connector is identical to the user alias of user1. Nevertheless, the emails retrieved with the POP3 Connector disappears.
When manually executing an email retrieval from the POP3 Connector Properties, logging is set to maximum, and in Application log, the retrieval seems to have exited properly.
After such a finished retrieval, the emails are not left at the ISP, neither do they show up in the specified user's mailbox, nor in the Administrator's mailbox.
Does anyone have any clue about what that is happening here? All updates have been installed on the server.
With luck, Merv's information has helped. The bottom line is that if you absolutely *must* use POP3 (and despite its many disadvantages, some people must) then the SBS2003 POP3 Connector is the very last piece of software on the planet that you should be using.
I fought with one for two weeks, a few years ago. The damn thing was *intermittent*. Most of the time, it *did* work correctly. In desperation, I switched to an external POP3 downloader which delivered to Exchange by SMTP, which has worked flawlessly since then. At five-minute intervals. With BCC and mailing lists.
The business about 'on demand' is a bit of a red herring. SMTP is not instant, and delays of a few minutes in each server are not unusual at busy times. Often, the people who need email *now* are the same people who think nothing of chucking several megabytes across the Net in an email to three people in different companies, apparently unaware that their own mail server might take several minutes to send it, or that it might even be queued behind other peoples' multi-megabyte emails. If you need *now*, then pick up the phone or send a fax.
