A Dell PE 830 with a Pentium D and SATA drives works quite well for one of
my clients. I did not spec the server...it was sitting on the floor of their
phone closet untouched by anything except dust when I first got there.
My own home office SBS 2003 is on an MSI desktop board with an add-in
Adaptec RAID card and mirrored SATA drives, and it too is purring along
quite nicely.
Company size and type of use determines a lot. I know of many small
companies that have no complaints on white box servers, although they are
not my preference.
My next server will be real server hardware for SBS 2008.

slight mod. SBS _can_ be installed on just about anything with a CPU.
It's more about 'desirability'.
SBS, due to its being many things for many people, requires good IO in RAM
and HDD.
Due to its 'central nature' as the backbone of your network you also want
reliability.
It is _possible_ for someone to build a 'white box' that satisfies such
criteria, I just don't see many people doing so.
_Most_ of the people who have an SBS that just 'does it', chugs away 24*7
with little intervention, have 'name brand' server boxes.
OTOH, I was (just now) asking some friends if I'm getting a little 'too
stuck in my ways', I called Dell today about a server and was advised to
look at the T300. I object because the base system processor is a Pentium
rather than Xeon, Xeon is however an option, and the Intel site describes
the Pentium offered as a 'workstation' processor. In the past I would have
thrown away the idea of using the series (T300) due to this. I was asking
my friends if I'm being a bit silly, either processor type is more than
likely able to handle the load.

You pretty much self answered your question.
To begin with, SBS 2003 should be installed on a "real" server hardware
if you want it to be what it is designed for, A Small Business Server
solution.
And second, what exactly did you build? What specs? what hardware?

No, I did not buy a server and I am using my self built machine.

Amnon, the answer is no.

Did you install on a computer designated for a file server (meaning

Bear, I am having the same problem. Any hardware I try to install
that
has
a
driver, which is all of them, will not install. Even hardware that
was
previously installed does not work if I take the ups connection
cord
out
and
try to plug it back in. I am asked to reinstall the hardware and
it
will
go
through its cycle and say that my hardware cannot be installed. Or
that
it
could not find my driver.
Also, every time I boot up, I am asked to install the same updates
that
I
have been installing everyday for about a week.
Anyone else like Bear and I?

Hello, I have an online biz that I currently run out of my home.
I
plan
on
opening up my first store front in April. In order to prepare for
this
venture I have purchased SBS 2003 to put on my new computer. I
HAD
win
XP
home addition which worked fine but I new that the features in
SBS
2003
would
be better. It turned out not to be able to upgrade from XP so it
deleted
XP.
But now that SBS 2003 is installed I cannot:
1. install any of my printers
2. install any of my MCFEE virus software
3. my computer does not recognize any of the installed drivers
for
sound
or
my dual moniter card from ATI
-My software and printer error states that they are for win 2000,
ME &
XP.
And will not work on this system. HELP! Is there any way that I
can
have XP
running in the background with the SBS software? As you can
probably
tell, I
am new to servers. I currently need to print out customer
receipts
but
can't. Please help! Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thank
you.
