Re: Cannot remove desktop files on Vista work station in SBS2003 d

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Okay, so based on the info you have, you are using roaming profiles *WITHOUT* folder redirection. This does work, but you have to understand that the system has to sync the profiles and that takes time. If you are going to do this without folder redirection (which I don't recommend) then you should have a solid 100Mbit network in place. 10 just isn't good enough if you get a few users that are trying to sync their profiles at the same time.

Secondly, make sure you have Vista SP1 installed. File transfers with Vista RTM were slow, so large files syncing in a profile may not complete. You get everything in place and it'll work.

According to gpresult no folder redirection exists. Our problem exists for
several users, and is not tied to any certain computer, but rather to the
account used to logon to the domain. What we do is following: erase all
unwanted files on the desktop. Move to server, open user profile folder (in
our case profiles\username.V2), remove the same files as again in the desktop
folder. After reboot of work station the files are gone. Any new file on the
desktop will remain until the above steps are done.

Shortcuts in the Quick Start menu cannot be removed at all, since I cannot
find them on the server. We have reason to believe that the issue might
resolve if all files are removed from the desktop once, and only small files
are then kept on the desktop. If there are bigger files (several MBs) left on
the desktop, the problem persists.

Hello,

Thank you for posting here. Also thanks for Cliff's input.

According to your description, I understand that:

You have a concern about the files and folders that reappear on the desktop.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Suggestions:
===============
Agree with Cliff that first you should check whether the desktop folder is
redirected or the profile is set to roaming. You can check the result set
of the group policy to verify it. To retrieve the result set of the applied
group policy:

1. Log onto the Windows Vista client with the problematic user account.
2. In the command prompt, run "gpresult /v" to get the result set of the
applied group policy.
3. Check whether the Desktop folder is redirected.

For the further investigation, please collect the following information:

1. Does the issue happen on the specific user? How it works if you log onto
the computer with another domain user or a local user?
2. Does the issue happen on the specific computer? How it works if you log
onto another computer with problematic user account?
3. Is there errors in the Event Log that may indicates the clue to the
cause?

I hope these steps will give you some help. If you have any questions or
concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,
Miles Li
