Re: Advice needed, hard drive 0 is failing on a RAID1 SBS2003 server, any tips welcome because I've not had to replace a HDD like this before.

one should always remember that you get what you pay for.
If you don't get the right ups..designed for use with a server...you might as well not get one
Here is a comparison chart to use for your consideration

Thanks for the replies guys.
There is no UPS, I will speak to the owner about spending on one.
So far no more disk error events either. Mmmm.
I will be able to get on site at a convenient time for the customer within a week and restart the server and go into the BIOS and see the state of the disks. I think a UPS should be on the cards, would be a wise long term move.
Any recommendations for a low cost simple UPS that will run a single server and possibly the small USB tape backup unit?
Thanks again.

But, the drive diagnostics should indicate whether there's a problem with the physical disk or not, and we can move on from that point?

It's probably quite legit, and needs your attention.

Another possibility is your power supply or power source. Are you on
a UPS? Server restart could be cause by faulty power and as a result
allowing the HD to become corrupt. If the HD was failing enough to
cause the server to restart I would think there would be something
more specific about it in the log. Bad power however would just take
out the server without any entries to that affect.
Just a thought.
