Re: Dual WAN - two internet providers - how to set up?

Wow - thanks to everyone who replied. I can see there are multiple
considerations to deal with and each reply filled in a different part of the
puzzle. I am looking at a TrendNet 4port dual wan vpn firewall router
TW100-brv324. The NIC connected to the T1 does have a public static IP and
so I'll use it as suggested by SuperGumby most likely and leave the other
system as a non-static IP address for now. You might want to take a look at
the router - it's pretty nice and features like network load balancing, VPN
access for up to 70 and a failover process.

Info on variable IP addresses:

Non static IP addresses can be gotten around by using a service like
www.dyndns.org, Dynamic DNS. You install a small client program onto a
machine in that network, it checks the external IP every 60 seconds. If
there is a change then it makes an update at DynDNS of your web address
being changed to a different IP.

Example:

The customer website for remote access is https://customer100.dyndns.org/.
Whenever your client needs to connect using remote web access then they go
to the website in their internet browser https://customer100.dyndns.org/ and
up will popup the login screen. The IP address could change 100 times in
the day, the website address will always be the same since it's dyndns that
will tell them which IP address to go to.

I use DynDNS and find it great. You can make any machine have a web address
if it's connected to the internet and can run the application (which is
small).

Hope this helps.

I have a client with a SBS 2003 Premium. Currently using a dual NIC
solution,
one for the LAN the other hooked to a segmented T1 line for internet
access
(384 bandwidth size I think). They would like to get a cable modem
connection
or a DSL line - as a back up internet connection and to see if the DSL or
Cable is faster than their partial T1. I'm wondering what kind of hardware
to
purchase? I saw a TrendMicro Dual WAN router that might work? Doesn't the
DSL
and/or Cable also need a fixed IP address - and since I'd now have two -
how
does remote web access work? The two administrator level series books I
have
on SBS do not go into any kind of detail on this but why not have a backup
internet service?
Thanks!
