That IP address (the "computer name") does not resolve to any server that I
can find. However, if I put it into Remote Desktop, it does try to connect
to a remote computer.
When to try to establish the remote desktop session, does it actually
connect to the remote computer and present you with a desktop?

I think you are right that it is a straight Remote Destop session to the
server.
If I right click the Icon on my Desktop and click 'Edit', the information
showing on the front ( General) tab, under 'Remote Desktop Connection,
gives
the computer name (81.101.84.205) and user name (OFFICE\Carol) Is this the
info you were looking for?
I have tried uninstalling SP3, restarting the computer, and re-attempting
connection. As I had no luck with this step, I re-installed SP3

Some thoughts...
It sounds like you are not using Remote Web Workplace, but rather, a
straight Remote Desktop session to the server or a workstation.
If you right click on the "Remote Link icon" on your desktop, can you
select
edit and then give us the information you see in the window?
I have a feeling that you were using RDP 5.1 with Windows XP SP2. Then
when
you upgraded to Windows XP SP3, it automatically installed RDP 6.1 which
may
act a bit different from previous versions.
One workaround (especially for someone with limited IT support) may be to
remove Windows XP SP3 from your computer:
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249
You can remove Windows XP SP3 by using Method 1 in the article above,
OR
in Add/Remove Programs, if you left click on Windows XP SP3, it should
present some information, one part of which says: "Last Used On". This
should be the date of its installation. Once you know this date, you can
perform a System Restore(per Method 3 in the article above).
NOTE: Important After you remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your
computer, visit the following Microsoft Web page and then install the
latest
security updates. http://update.microsoft.com
If all this works, it will give you some breathing room to ask your IT
people to correct any problems with Windows XP SP3 and RDP 6.1 access.
However, your Microsoft automatic security updates settings will try to
download Windows XP SP3 again, so you must remain vigilant to not install
it
until your IT people direct you to do so.

- SP3
- When I click the remote link icon, it does not appear to open Windows
Explorer (so I cannot supply the URL this way as there is no address
bar),
but takes me straight to the log on screen.
(I am wondering if the problem may have first arisen having upgraded
from
SP2 to SP3 ? Is this a possibility?)

It will tell you that the OS is Windows XP, but should also tell you
which Service Pack you are at? Is this SP2 or SP3?
Secondly, go ahead and click on that link..then up in the address bar
you
should be able to highlight the URL in the address bar
Then paste it in your response here.
