It might work. It's one of those things that usually works, but when it doesn't for some reason, you're basically out of luck.

One thing you _should_ do, and that I should have mentioned. Run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard before you unjoin the box. It gives a reasonable fallback position if your profile doesn't come over clean.

You need to go to the computer and remove it from the domain, joining it to a workgroup. Reboot. and then run http://servername/connectcomputer to rejoin it to the domain. After you're done, you can have users log in to create a profile and then copy over the old profile information.
