Re: VPN Setup Help

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I think with a pair of hands and eyes at Jeremy's location, this could all
be set up by a consultant remotely. ThirdTier.net comes to mind:

It is probably time to call in a pro. For a couple hours of consulting /
hands on you probably can get this all to work and stop tearing out your
hair.

If you want to disclose your registered company domain name or your
company email address we can do some checking on your public DNS records
for you.

If you want to disclose your location - city and state - we may be able to
help you find a qualified SBS knowledgeable pro.

I'm not a professional when it comes to networking...

Hardware, yes. Not anything else. I look stuff up and I post questions on
this site if I get stuck. And I'm stuck.

I was reading a previous thread on Small Business Server ISP forums...

My internet, which is Dedicated T1, gets plugged into an "Ad-Tran"
Router/Modem with only 1 Ethernet Port, but what confuses me, I can't do
any
port forwarding on it... There are no settings for me to set. Per my ISP.

I plug my 16 port Switch into the "Ad-Tran" and everything else gets
plugged
into my 16 port Switch (Dlink DSS +16). The Server only has 1 NIC, and I
don't use Exchange Server, ie: It's not setup properly :(

I would love any help you can get me.

Thanks.

Hi Jeremy:

I was thinking you would want this, but wanted to be sure.

For this you should use the RWW (Remote Web Workplace). No VPN is
necessary.

If you have not used it before, it is a think of beauty.

If you need assistance, search for "how to", or post back here.

I expect hi m to be able to connect to a workstation within the
network, so
he can access company software for inventory purposes.

I have reposted this in Small Business Server ISP as well...

Hi Jeremy:

What do you expect the outside person to connect to, and what do you
expect
him to do when he connects?

Once we know what the expectations are, we may be able to help you
more.

Hey Everyone,

I need some help setting up a VPN... I've never done a VPN before,
but
I
love how I get elected to do all this stuff...

I am running a 2 Servers, 1 with SBS the other is just a software
host
server...

The one with SBS is 2003 standard edition no ISA and only 1 NIC
card.

How my network is setup is I have a dedicated T1 line coming into
what
my
ISP calls an "Ad-Tran Router" which doesn't need any special
configuring
for
allowing VPN. My ISP said it allows all traffic... whatever that
means...

But the router has 1 ethernet port on it, and it's plugged into a
DLink
DSS+16 Switch. And according to DLink doesn't need any special
configuring
for allowing VPN. It's just dummy hardware according to DLink.

I've tried using 2 different remote access programs.
One being "Desktra" which times out, it can't find the host... the
host
is
installed on a workstation (Not the server).

The other software is called "RealVNC" and that one times out as
well...
can't find the host.

I'm obviously doing something wrong... or haven't done enough.

The person that needs to VPN is in Maine, I'm in Pennsylvania. He's
going
to
be using various networks as he's a traveling sales
representative...

He's not very computer literate, and I'm installing the software on
his
laptop, and i'm becoming very frustrated with this entire situation
as
I'm
not a networking professional... I'm a hardware pro. I've NEVER
setup a
VPN,
nor had the urge to... But i figured since I HAD to, I'd use
software
as
the
easier choice... but That's not turning out to be true.. or maybe
it
is,
and
i need something else done...

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Oh BTW: My SBS 2003 is handing out the DHCP.
