James,
Yes, we too found that unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable (at the UPS
end) immediately cured a USB communication lost problem (until the next
time...), but this is not a very satisfactory state of affairs, especially in
a small office which normally has no-one present with any IT expertise at all.
We did braindead the UPS, once to see if it cured the USB problem (it
didn't) and then a second time on the switch to serial. It sounds
terrifying, but was quite simple and straightforward.

A USB connection was in fact used for the first few months. However, the

The unreliability of the USB connection was the reason for currently trying a
serial one.
Hi JPL,
Just a shot in the dark:
I too have been experiencing communication errors when using the USB
cable from my APC unit to my Dell server. The communication just drops
at random times and leaves the server unable to gracefully shutdown in
the event of a prolonged powercut... The only way I found to get it
working again was to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in again -
not brilliant when it drops at 3am on a Saturday morning ( I mostly shut
the server down if this happens at weekends as the server is 300 miles
from me).
I have looked into swapping to serial as I am told this is more stable.
On contacting APC they said I needed to "braindead" the UPS unit... I've
not done this myself yet, but I wonder if that was done on yours?
