Two common reasons are:
1) Simply trying to print too quickly after connecting the TS/RDP session
1st time. On the initial connect of a PC to either Terminal Services or an
RDP session the driver from the remote printer is loaded onto the controlled
PC. If the controlled PC has a suitable driver this is used but if not the
RDP Client attempts to transfer the driver from the remote PC to that being
controlled, this can take (reasonable) time because, I think, the transfer
runs at fairly low priority.
2) The Terminal Server or controlled PC cannot 'match' the driver for the
printer. In this case the controlled PC will log an error in the event log
(system log, I think, rather than app log).
In your case I suspect that the controlled PC (XP) cannot find a match for
the printer it sees on your remote (Vista) PC.
Another reason is that the User logging onto the controlled session (TS or
RDP) does not have permission to load a driver. Again, this is logged in the
event log of the controlled system.
Check the logs on the system being controlled, they should reveal the
reason.

After upgrading to Vista at home, I can't print on a local printer. It
used to work with the old XP box.
SBS 2003 for the network.
Vista Home Premium for remoting in
The desktop being accessed at work is an XP Pro OS
Also, there's two printers on the home network. The preferred laser
printer is connected directly to the home network.
Thanks for any help in advance.
David
