Re: Domain server re-install

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

There is no MS supported way to change the size of a system drive. There are
3rd party partitioning products that can do it at your own risk.

Larry,

What would I have to do to just expand my boot (C) drive? That is really
my first priority as I am running out of free space on that partition. I
think I can copy everything on the D partition and then restore it but I
really need to just get more room on C. Thanks.

I would not split out the RAID. ymmv.

Since the system is SCSI, you might consider adding a pair of SATA drives
on their own controller. Would be very inexpensive, in computer terms,
and could be moved to the next server, if and when it comes.

The other partition has 12GB free. Did I mention the server is a dual
36GB Raid1 system? I may suggest getting another larger drive but I'm
not high on putting money into an older server. Also, this is one of
our customers server, so the decision would be theirs. What about
removing Raid1 so I could have just a 36GB C drive and a 36GB D drive?
Is that possible? Thanks.

You are pretty tight. Can be managed, but a PITA. You did not say how
much free space is left on the second partition, and if you have
already move such things as:

user shared folders
exchange databases
windows update files/folders
and there are lots more.

If you think you want to try to do this, I can post up my boilerplate
on things that can be moved.

Any chance you could add more drives, say two 72 GB or 144 GB for the
data. In that case you could do a very nice job of moving your data to
the bigger drives and extending the size of the C partition to use the
entire 36 GB drive.

Note that if you hope to go to SBS 2008 on this hardware, a 36 GB C
partition will not be large enough.

In any case you will need a backup / restore or an imaging product.

It is Raid1 (mirror) with 2 36GB SCSI drives. The C drive is
partitioned with 10GB and the D drive with the rest (23.82). There is
a 102MB Basic partition which I think holds some Dell setup programs
or something).

What is the C drive made up of? One complete drive, or a portion of
one drive?

If a portion of one drive, how much space is available on the other
partitions of this or any other physical drives?

And what is the subsystem? On board SATA, Raid1? Raid 5? Discrete
Controller?

If there is room on other partitions, we can show you how to move a
ton of stuff.

Or, you can get a bigger drive(s) and use any of the backup/image -
restore systems.

Works fine if standalone drive or RAID1, tricky if RAID5.

We have a Win 2003 SBS server that has too small of a boot partition
(C
drive) so I think we need to re-install the OS and expand the
partition to
use the entire drive. When I re-install the OS can I use the same
domain
name and will workstations need to re-join the domain?
Also, is there any other way around this or other options for me?
Thanks.
