Re: SBS 2003 R2 10 User CALs License

Would it possibly help to separate the two ideas into 'Terminal Services'
(what was previously called Terminal Services Application Mode) and 'Remote
Desktop'?

SBS cannot be put into TSAM. Two RD sessions are available for remote
administration. No standard user should be able to log onto a DC so
effectively this limits the RD sessions to 'Domain Administrators', 'Backup
Operators', maybe some other groups.

In Windows 2000 Server the RD capability was called 'Terminal Services
Administration Mode' (which sortta confuses my use of TSAM acronym, but hey,
we're sensible people). Admin mode is not a choice on 2003, RD replaces it.

RD can also be used via the 'Connect to my PC at work' link by all users in
an SBS domain. This does not require TS licensing but probably changes the
type of SBS CAL (User vs Device) that should be used.

If you also implement a separate TS, and apply TS licenses to it, those
people or devices assigned TS licenses can access this through the RWW link
to 'Connect to my company's Application Server'.

I did not know this would technically be a violation of the license. This
helps me clarify my understanding of RWW and RD.

When a mobile user logs in and accesses his or her desktop [provided we
have
enough CALs for this user], this is also using Terminal Services. Right?
But they can do that. Right? This does not count towards one of the
Terminal Services Administrator licenses. Right?

Thanks everyone,

This is a small businss server. There is not a separate terminal
server. This always bugged me when we purchased 10 licenses.

Most of you said for administrative purposes. Does this mean when
someone signs in as administrator? Or does it mean anyone who signs
in to do administrative like task?

Yes, it means "administrative tasks". Signing in as a user with
administraive rights and doing non administrative tasks is technically a
license violation, and a *really bad* practice.

Is there away to add terminal server licenses to a SBS without adding
a physical/virtual server?

If no ternminal server is installed, then how do I terminate the
rogue users out there that are not really connected anymore?

The SBS box itself allows only 2 RDP connections for administrative
purposes. If this is a separate TS then it can be setup in
application mode with the appropriate number of TS CALs.

I keep on getting this message and I know I am the only one
accessing the server through remote web workplace.

"terminal srever has exceeded the number of allowed connections"

First how do I terminate the connections without booting the server?

Why doesn't it recognize the 10?

Thank you, Ed Podowski
