Are both Vista and SBS up to date with service packs and updates? If both are up to date there shouldn't be a problem joining the domain. Another thing that may cause a problem is the DNS settings. Vista will not join a domain unless DNS is operating properly. XP will join the domain and work, although not efficiently, if DNS is misconfigured. On both the SBS server LAN NIC and on the Vista box DNS must be pointing to the SBS server and nothing else. There must be nothing in the Alternate DNS Server box. If the Vista box is a laptop make sure you are using a wired connection to join the domain. Once joined wireless should be fine. If you meet all those conditions then joining the domain should work exactly like XP. Browse to http://servername/connectcomputer and follow the instructions.

Hi
We bought a VISTA business pc about a year ago and getting it onto our SBS network was unbelievebly complex
(an ms guy spent a day dialled and still failed) eventually we unistalled all of the service packs on the sbs and reinstalled
only the ones required for sbs connectivity (service pack 2 I think was killing it)
Anyway, the experience was so unpleasant that we only bought XP machines after that.
Anyway, we bought two machines last week. One had XP on and joined the network in 30 seconds.
The other has VISTA business. I can't get it connected. The error message is.....
---------------------------
Small Business Server Network Configuration Wizard
---------------------------
An error occurred while trying to copy the Client Setup files. Check the following, and then try again:
If you use a public proxy server to browse the Internet, clear the Internet Explorer connection setting for using a proxy server. To do this, from the Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then clear the check box in Proxy Server.
If you do not have a public proxy configured for Internet Explorer, then your network administrator must reinstall the Client Deployment component on the server. To do this, from Add or Remove Programs, run Windows Small Business Server Setup in maintenance mode, and then run Client Setup again.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
We don't use a proxy server and I dpon't see why the client deployement tools would need reinstalling when they worked ok
for the XP machine just a short while ago.
Am I missing something?
Why must this be so unpleasant?
any help appreciated
thanks
jc
