DNS is working fine (as far as I can tell) i.e. I can browse the internet,
send emails etc. The question is what is the connection between POP3 manager
and Sharepoint?! I find it hard to believe that two components broke down
simultaneously but unrelated.

Although the update did not conclude successfully, chaos happened next. First
problem was that POP3 Connection Manager service stopped working. If ordered
to start, it only starts for a couple of seconds and then halts again. I
tried to reinstall the network component but once I unistalled it, I was not
in a position to install it back as I was getting an error message before
installation ended.
Then I though to go backwards and try to fix another problem which appeared
with SHAREPOINT 2.0. SQL instance was not starting for Sharepoint and I
though that they might somehow be related with the problem with the POP3
manager. Looking at the SQL log I was getting the "2008-09-05 19:37:52.04
spid3 SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service
Control Manager." error message.
After spending hours on the net, it seems that it is a SQL issue is a
well-document problem but the proposed solutions did not work for me. So my
only option was to follow Article 829114 to re-install Sharepoint. Again
(guess!) things did not go well as I was getting this error message ""An
error occurred while creating user accounts. Open Active Directory Users and
Computers, and manually create a test user to verify that Active Directory is
running. Rerun Setup." once the Windows Component manager finished
installation of Sharepoint.
The result is that neither sharepoint nor POP3 Manager is now working and
thus we cannot work in our company too.
Any suggestions are very very welcome.
Cheers,
John
hard time believing that the SQL patch interferes with POP.
What's the exact error you get?
