If it is SBS 2003 PE with ISA 2004 already installed in a 2 NIC
configuration you can get a lot of info from its logging capabilities which
in turn can be useful for blocking particular outbound traffic.

Hello fellow sbs'ers
I have been put in the dep end of a rather makeshift server role with the
main unit server being 2003 and sbs +sp2.
There are a number of foriegn peripherals such as wireless access, a cisco
877 and a netgear managed gigabit switch, things to look forward to
learning
more about..
However, we recently had fiber installed and someone has been going
ballistic with downloads, and the boss to put it politely is certainly not
happy, we used 22Gb in 20 operational days with +8 days closed.
Most disturbingly, I noted since this was brought to my attention that we
used just over 300Mb each night for the past two nights, with no-one
onsight
using the fiber connection...very fishy..
The boss's nephew is somtimes on site, he has been spoken to in regards
to
this and now uses a feed for an adsl connection, so now isnt part of the
equation.
We should be using approximately 50 - 60ish mb an hour as an average
approx
500-700mb a day, the daily avarage is just over 1.1gb! and the isp really
sting you when the cap is blown.
For me the scenario is, I am very new to server management more a Gee than
a
geek, had a few years at desktop level and then walked into this eclectic
situation, with several foriegn bits of hardware and a server i really
dont
know how to find anything in.
I'm trying to find if exchange is installed, if its an ias or isa server
and
what other monitoring tools are installed that maybe available, so i can
use
them to find the offending ip track its usage and block its favourite
internet sites it goes to..better not be beebo or facebook...grr.
The boss like most boss's isnt to keen to spend additional funds on a
network monitoring software so if there is any functionality in 2003 / sbs
that can do this? could someone with superior knowledge tell me what to
do
or read up on regarding this.
I really appreciate any input with this and also if / what other functions
are available etc.. and helping me track the offender / i.p - or if you
can
offer any advice on free compatible software which will enable me track
and
catch the culprit.
Thanks in advance for you time on this.
