I don't use SBS Backup, I do have the alert enabled, but I don't get the alerts. The actual alert is "backup failed," so if you're not running the backups, you wouldn't have any failures, right?
Anyway, the answer to your question is to go to the Monitoring page of the Server Mgmt console and click Change Alert Notifications. On the Event Log Errors tab, clear the check box for the backup alert.

Is there a way to selectively switch off components from the health monitor
reporting window? such as backup failed etc etc. We do have a backup strategy
in place but it doesn't use ntbackup and would like to eliminate these alerts.
Thanks in advance.
