yes, you are correct, my original post was asking how to host a public
website on my LAN, but i have been enlightened (i didn't realize i could
manipulate the DNS entries so that my website could be hosted *cheaply*
elsewhere)
& yes i was asking how to set up the DNS entries to keep what i have (RWW &
OWA) and have www go somewhere else
time to sign up for a website

Easy turbo. I know this is a hot button for ya, but I read his latest post very differently than you did.

His latest question was about setting up a public site "somewhere" which is open to interpretation. That somewhere very easily could be a web hosting company. It seems to me he's just trying to get the logistics of how DNS works to facilitate this.

You should pick up a book or do some reading on DNS if you are unfamiliar with how this works. It is easy to *really* screw things up. But the short answer to your question is this:

1) You'd create an MX record that references an A record...NOT your IP address.
2) You'd create an A record that is the target of the reference from step #1, and THAT has your SBS public IP.
3) You'd create another A record for "www" and point it at your website IP, which you'll get from your website host company when you sign up.
4) If you are using other services on SBS, such as RWW or OWA then you should create distinct A records for each service.
5) Optionally, you can change the root if you choose to the website IP (so users forgetting to type www. in their browser still get your site), but make sure that MX record is WORKING first or you'll break your mail.

What you are not getting is that it is NOT advisable or recommended to host a public website on your LAN. Huge security risk.

You can pay Godaddy 4.29/month (less if pay annually) to host your site and your SBS network is safe and sound
