Re: public web site

What you are not getting is that it is NOT advisable or recommended to host a public website on your LAN. Huge security risk.

You can pay Godaddy 4.29/month (less if pay annually) to host your site and your SBS network is safe and sound

i have had SBS up for the last couple of years
i use dyndns custom to track my IP (altho it is not dynamic)
i took a look & i can manipulate the A & MX records
so, all i need to do is set up a public web site somewhere and then create
the MX record (it is using the host default at the moment) & point it to my
IP and change the A record to point to the IP of my web site?

Yes. There can be many servers hosting various servers with a domain name.
What you need is:

1) Somebody hosting your public DNS records.
2) An MX record in your public DNS space pointing to your email server.
3) An A record pointing "www" to another server.

You may already have some of this (you didn't indicate how far along you
were with your SBS deployment) so that is something you'd need to work out
with any partnerships you've already formed.

i want to use the same registered domain name
is there a way to receive email at mycompany.com (my server) and have a
separate website at www.mycompany.com?

Hi Mark:

Best not to host a public web site inside your LAN at all. If you must
have
it in your office, put it in a DMZ off the router in a separate subnet.

With public hosting available for free, or little cost, and you must have
an
ISP anyway, what will be gained by having it inside your office?
