Yes, SMTP is not an encrypted protocol, but how does sending through a smarthost improve security? If exchange is configured for direct delivery then no passwords are transmitted outbound (all outbound SMTP traffic is transmitted anonymously unless specifically configured otherwise) so you've really created more work than necessary. Perhaps I'd better understand the problem if I knew what, specifically, you were trying to accomplish, and why.

I am trying to configure a SBS server to use a single SMTP account for
sending email since SMTP is not an encrypted protocol. To achieve this
end I have done the following.
Created a email account on my ISP's email server just for sending email
and made sure it is enabled.
Configured the SmallBusiness SMTP Connctor for outbound security.
Exchange system manager -> Connectors -> SmallBusiness SMPT Connector
-> Properties -> Advanced -> Outbound Security.
Once on this data *** I clicked basic authentication (password is
sent in clear text)
Entered the email account I set up at my ISP for sending email
username@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Entered the password
Clicked ok and ok again.
I have verified that the same settings appear if I navigate via the
Server manager to Advanced Management -> mydomain (exchange) ->
connectors -> SmallBusiness SMTP Connector -> Advanced -> Outbound
security.
The same data also appears if you go to the protocol via the exchange
system manager.
In the General section of the SmallBusiness SMTP connector I have
selected to forward all mail through this connector to the following
smart host mail.mydomain.com. An MX record exists for this entry and it
is a valid domain on the internet.
I have also verified that the same smart host information appears under
Server manager -> Advanced Management -> Mydomain (Exchange) -> Servers
-> Protocols -> SMPT -> default SMTP Virtual Server (Properties)
Advanced data ***. The fields are populated as follows FQDN =
mydomain.com and the smart host = mail.mydomain.com
So after verifying the settings are the same everywhere and confirmed
that I am only running SMTP adaptor so there shouldn't be a conflict,
outbound email the sending users default SMTP email address instead of
the one specified in outbound security. This results in a conflict as I
purposely have different passwords for the ISP email accounts and the
user's domain accounts.
Any insights on anything I might have missed would be greatly
appreciated!
