Re: Indexing in SBS2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Thanks Clff. I had issues uninstalling it so had to reinstall it and that
still didnt work. So uninstalled again and remove some registry keys that I
found off some forum and then reinstalled. It then uninstalled properly. So
its all fixed now but it wasnt easy.

The checkbox you unchecked is the built-in windows indexing service which is
*NOT* related to WDS.

The magnifying glass in the lower corner would indicate that you've
installed Windows Desktop Search (WDS) at some point, as that does *NOT*
appear as part of the index service you disabled on the drive. WDS (or its
successor, Windows Search 4) is not a component included with SBS2003...and
yes, it can have a significant impact on your server's performance. I
personally don't recommend installing it on a server at all...so if you can
uninstall it, you'll be much happier.

I have purchase a new HP server running sbs2003 and have setup a RAID for
the
2 hard disks that came with the server and they have been setup to mirror
each other. From time to time the sever runs really slowly and I noticed
this
was happening when the server was trying to Index. I disabled windows
search
as I believed this may have been causing this to happen. When the server
was
trying to index it would slow all access to the server down to a snails
pace.

I noticed that on the drive if you select properties there was an option
checked to allow the index service to index this desk for fast searching.

Since i have done that I dont get the delay waiting for files to open etc
as
much but I still get it from time to time and its really slow. I still get
down the bottom right hand corner a magnifine glass with the message
saying
waiting to receive index status. I thought I had turned that off.

We do run SQL 2005 for our Great Plains software on this server but I
doubt
that is slowing down the access to the server.

Any help to try and work out what is causing the server to delay opening
files and sometimes saying that the clients outlook cannot connect to
exchange would be great.

Thanks

.
