Hello Kevin,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you get "Cannot connect
to
the configuration database" error on your SBS companyweb site. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we
can
resolve this issue:

1. Please apply the following hotfix on SBS:

You receive a "Cannot connect to the configuration database" error
message
when you access your Windows SharePoint Services Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833183

2. If the issue persists, please try the following steps:

a. Click Start , and then click Run .
b. In the Open box, type cmd , and then click OK .
c. At the command prompt, type the following lines, and then press
ENTER
after each line:
net stop mssql$sharepoint
net start mssql$sharepoint
d. Type exit , and then press ENTER to quit Command Prompt.

3. Did you apply the following hotfix on SBS?

MS08-037: Description of the security update for DNS in Windows Server
2008, in Windows Server 2003, and in Windows 2000 Server (DNS
server-side):
July 8, 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951746
MS08-040: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2000 GDR and
MSDE 2000: July 8, 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948110

If yes, please try the following steps:
1) If having the SQL Desktop engine, install SQL Management Studio 2005
2) Check for the database
3) we will find that configuration database is without (+) sign and so
not
able to expand the database
4) Go to services.msc > Check whether the service Windows Internal
Database
is running under Network service or local service.
5) If it is Network, change it into Local service ad restart the SQL
service as it is required that SQL services should run under the Local
service account only.
6) Now run the Product and Configuration Wizard on the Sharepoint server
7) Site will come up with the correct database associated

4. If the issue persists, we may need to reinstall companyweb on SBS.
How to remove and how to install the Windows Small Business Server 2003
SharePoint Services 2.0 companyweb Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829114

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Please capture screenshots of the error messages and send the
pictures
to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

2. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure
will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)
