Seriously its like watching Alien VS predator, awsome argument. No hard
feelings, everyone was in fact trying to help Jaredean.
There was no argument, it's a discussion and had not entered the
argument stage, at least I didn't think it had.
We HAD been running
business in workgroup environment for more than 5 years sharing files between
workstations,
Yep, seen it before, many times, and I've listened to them complain
about missing files, how the computer died before they copied all the
files to another computer, how they can't print from time to time,
etc...
We have one customer, a 3 system painting business, that runs everything
in a Workgroup, but, all the data is maintained on a workstation that
has Dual Drives (RAID) and even has a 36/72GB Tape drive for nightly
backups. Again, the cost of adding RAID was the price of a cheap SATA
drive because the computer came with RAID built into the motherboard.
LUCKY US. Last year a computer person came to see us and after
hearing his speech all of us requeste/forced the boss to buy new server, we
got a new server with sbs. Its fantastic, but hey we survived for more than 5
years AND guess what we didn't have a backup either, stupid us, then :) If
there was any problem with anyones computer then we would call a guy from
local computer shop, he would fix what ever needed to and thats it.
Eventhough I now believe Raid is a must, there are many people like my boss
who don't want to spend money on computer, and just ignore the fact that it
is risky business, and then there is nothing anyone can do, what a life :)
There are MANY types of IT people out there, many that pretend to be IT
Professionals, some that have very limited experience, then some that
can work with small and large customers - some even know how to spec the
hardware and still provide redundancy while keeping things very
affordable. We meet a LOT of IT people that claim to be Professionals,
but that's because they've failed their customers and we now have their
business :)
