Here at the office, I use all 3Com with very good results. However, we seem to get really good signal here for some reason, so this may not be the truest test. (I get many great signals from the neighbors, even those in other buildings).
At my boss's house, a large 3 story, he got horrible range with a Linksys WRT54GC, a constant source of complaints. At Charlie Russel's recommendation, I got him a D-Link DIR-655, which solved all his problems. He gets great signal strength and performance throughout the house, and he's much happier.
My own WRT54GC is failing intermittently, so I've got one of those D-Links on my shopping list. Seems like they've just come down in price, too. I assume, but am not sure, that you can turn off router mode and just use it as a WAP.

I've run into a situation where a standard Linksys WAP54 series does not
reach the 100' down the hall to other offices and would like to know if
anyone has experience with WAP units that have stronger signals, for
inside use - don't need a router, but if we can disable the routing
function and use it as a AP that will work also.
Thanks.
