Rebooted several times, still hangs at same place in post, waited 20
minutes and it's still hung-up.

Powered off and disconnected USB cable, powered on, works fine.
Connected USB cable, made sure drive was working, rebooted and server
came back up just fine....

I've seen this happen to many vendors servers over the last couple
years. Never seen this happen with a Tape drive or a Drive Caddy type
solution.

What was the price on the Tape drive and caddy system in comparison to
your USB drive?

My only problem with USB drives is that it's hard to find anything but
the cheap consumer stuff that's designed to fail around the time the
warranty expires.
