Here is some documentation.

With similar hardware should not be to big of a problem.

VMware is the greatest thing since slice bread. There are many solutions out there, best to find out what the expectations with the company are and how long they can be down.

This is problematic at best!

You need to do some kind of bare metal backup with software that you can restore on dissimilar hardware.
The best way I have ever seen to do a complete restore is with VMware.

You can take and HP server install everything make your backup. Then that machine get blown away and you buy a DELL server take 15 minutes install VMware ESX then your backup software restore the Windows machine and you are up and running no problem no fuss. 2 to 3 hours MAX most likely 1.5 hours.

The is one of the top reasons I use virtualization in the first place. I am very interested in testing the new MS product also.

One of my customers is doing contingency planning.

They are very good about ensuring Backups are run for SBS (and
applications, documents, etc), and they make sure recent copies are
kept off-site as well as in the fireproof safe.

However, they asked me a question I couldn't put my hand on heart and
answer...... It was:

If our server hardware was destroyed, and we bought a new one,
installed SBS on it, could we then do a Restore from the backup files?

I'll be pleasantly surprised if people tell me Yes........

And in case anyone feels I should know all this already, is there a
document somewhere that describes what should be done in terms of
contingency planning?

TIA,

JohnK
