Susan,
I did call MS Support as you requested. I was informed that the engineers
were working on a hotfix to resolve this issue and that it would be
available within 24 hours. I am sending the aforementioned files.
Thanks for the assistance.

Can you zip up the content of the LOG folder under mSSQL$sharepoint and
all files that start with SQL*.* under c:\windows with a recent date and
send them to me?

My MSDE instance is running Local service not network service? What is
that service have as it's "log on as"?
Call 1-866-pcsafety.
Current known issues are interactions with Zone Alarm and the DNS patch.

Same issue here after applying updates. Noted that the MSSQLSERVER
service is started, but the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT is not. Attempts to start
it fail. Companyweb access attempts result in the following:
Cannot connect to the configuration database. For tips on
troubleshooting this error, search for article 823287 in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com.
This document states four (4) causes for this issue.
1. The SQL database is not running.
[ I've verified that the SQL database is not running and will not
start. The MSSQLSERVER service is running, but the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT
service is not running. Attempts to start it fail.]
2. Internet Information Services (IIS) is configured to run in IIS 5.0
isolation mode.
[ Verified IIS is not running in IIS 5.0 islolation mode ]
3. The account that is used by application pool does not have the
required permissions to the SQL Server database.
[ Unable to verify that the account (Network service) that is used by
the application pool is the account that has the required permissions
to the SQL Server database. Attempts to verify permissions generate a
'connection failed, check SQL Server Registration Properties' error.
Unable to edit the Registration Properties. Deleted the
servername\SHAREPOINT server from the SQL Server Group in Enterprise
Manager, then recreated a new SQL Server Registration. Had to manually
enter the name (not in list). Set to use Windows authentication. Not
change - still unable to start.]
4. Network connectivity has been lost between the Windows SharePoint
Services server and the Microsoft SQL Server server.
[ I have network connectivity and correct name resolution between the
servers ]
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, checking Google
again.

I have a problem with LAN connections after applying updates KB951748,
KB951746, and KB948110. I can not connect to the SBS 2003 server or
SharePoint Website nor can I ping anything from the SBS box. Has
anyone else had any troubles? Internet connections are working,
clients are setup for DHCP on the router. Everything was fine until
the updates. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
.
