I have recently installed SBS2003 on a Dell PowerEdge server.
I cannot ping my server or connect to Exchange with Outlook, however, I
can log in to Exchange/OWA via a web browser using the server's static
IP or DNS name.
Pretty much all routers refuse to return pings by default, as Cliff
said. I can't really see the point if you're going to open well-known
ports, but that's where to look first. You're probably only checking as
far as the router anyway, as few routers will forward ICMP to internal
machines.
If you have OWA working, you can use Outlook over https. Details are on
the Microsoft website and on the server's RWW page. The native
Outlook-Exchange protocol, MAPI, doesn't go over the Internet directly.
