First, it's called a Transition Pack. Not a migration pack. ;) So, I
changed the subject line.

okay...brain fart on my part. Thanks for the correction.

1.) If you have 65 users, and 65 User or Device CALs to cover them, then
you need to buy 65 TP CALs to cover them. The TP comes with 5, so you'd
need 60 more. If you were under your current purchased CALs, you would
have two choices: purchase the right number of SBS CALs, and then the
right number of TP CALs, or do the transition and purchase the necessary
additional Server and Exchange (and SQL if Premium Edition) CALs.

Thanks for the information. Kinda what I thought. But wanted to make sure.
I would hate to go to the client with bad information. I believe that I am
much clearer on this.

2.) Yes, you do know. If it still says it's SBS, it hasn't been
transitioned. Once the transition is complete, you will have Windows
Server 2003 Standard Edition and Exchange Server 2003 Standard. They will
have no SBS limits on them.

Small Business Server....so, not yet done. Thanks for the tip!

3.) What do you do with the SBS box? anything you want to. It's no longer
running SBS, it's running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. And is
licensed for that. How you manage your hardware is up to you and is now
now different than if you'd started with full Server and Exchange.

Gotcha. I can figure this out. Just wanted to make sure that I had the
right info.

4.) Before running the transition pack, a few suggestions from my
experiences running it when I was writing the SBS R2 book:

=====
Before you run the Transition Pack there are a few steps you should take
to ensure a smooth transition:

1.) Do a thorough, complete, VERIFIED backup. If it isn't verified and
tested, it isn't a backup, IMHO.
2.) Clean up your HD. Remove temporary files, old logs, and so forth. Run
Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe)
3.) Defragment the HD. Use the built in, or use a good third party such as
PerfectDisk from Raxco.
4.) Disconnect the server from the internet completely. (Easiest way is
just unplug the network from the back of the server.)
5.) Stop any third party services that are running as a system account and
set them to disabled or uninstall them. This includes AV, disk utilities,
and any real-time monitoring programs.
6.) Remove Veritas BackupExec (see KB: 914990)
7.) Run regedit and check for the presence of the key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Small Business. If it exists, remove it.

That's it. Just make sure you have the matching TP version to your SBS
version. (ie, SP1 for SP1 SBS, etc.)

Also, make sure you have media kits available for your individual server
software packages. You shouldn't need them, but it's good to have, just in
case.

Finally, just run the transition. Expect it to take 2+ hours, and 7 or
more reboots. Even if you give it the logon password, you may get prompted
the first reboot - I did in 4 of 7 transitions I did last spring. No
discernable pattern to it. Once that first one completes, though, you can
go grab some lunch/dinner/whatever and it should run by itself.

Thanks for the information. I am much more lucid on this topic now (sorry,
have not used that word in a good long time).

Good afternoon!

Okay, feeling a bit dense. So, pleaes pardon the ignorance.

Have a client (SBS2003 SP2 Standard) who is rapidly approaching the 75
user limit. Apparently my company has already purchased the migration
pack.

QUESTION: assuming 65 users at the moment (all of whom are licensed) we
would have to purchase 65 "migration pack" licenes? If we had only 35
licenses users then we would need to purchase only 35 "migration pack"
licenses.....but what happens with the other 30? Have to purchase the
full blown licesnes for everything, correct?

I do not know if my company has applied the migration pack already?

QUESTION: how do I tell? Why asking? The person who may or may not
have done this is no longer with the company and may or may not be
willing/able to tell us (I have a pretty good relationship with him but
may not ask....).

Assuming that the migration pack has already been install: what do we do
with the SBS2003 box? I told you I was feeling really dense about
this!!!!!!

I really need that specific box for a couple other things....

What we have already done (before I became involved with this account):

-put in another EXCH2003 SP2 box
-put in a Domain Controller

All e-mail flows into and out of the "new" Exchange Server.

Thanks,

Cary

PS. I will quite likely have some more questions...
