Mike: *how* are you trying to install the fax software. Your initial
post isn't clear on this. It may be something as simple as using the
wrong package...

Hello Mike,
Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Cris for the input.
According to your description, I understand that you unable to install
fax
client on workstations and get event error 1004. If I have
wethe problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if
/ncan
resolve this issue:
1. Please try to reinstall fax client on XP client via the following
steps:
a. Open Control Panel and open Add or Remove Programs.
b. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
c. Uncheck Fax Services and click Next.
d. Finish the process.
e. You can run the following command to install Shared Fax Client (for
Windows XP only):
"sysocmgr.exe /u:"\\%sbsserver%\clietnapps\faxxp\fax_inst.inf" /r /q
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/05/22/how-to-configure-fax-on-wind/i
\\%sbsserver%\clientapps\faxxp\fax_master.inf.
2. If you run Vista client, please refer to the following page:
How to Configure Fax On Windows Vista for an SBS 2003 Environment
workstation?ows-vista-for-an-sbs-2003-environment.aspx
3. If the issue persists, you may need to try the installation after
clean
boot on the clients:
To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to
select
the Selective Startup button.
c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.
d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft
Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remaining Non-Microsoft
Services.
e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked
to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
f. After restarting, please try to install the fax client again.
g. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root
cause
of this issue.
If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above,
please
help me collect some information for further investigation:
1. Does this issue happen on all workstations or individual
check
2. Do you get any error when you install fax client? If yes, please
capture
screenshots of the error messages and send the pictures to me at
v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
3. Save the application event log and system event log as evt files on
the
problematic client and send to my mailbox: v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Terence Liu (MSFT)
