A couple of suggestions:
1. If you are going to have a separate Exchange server, install it and
move the mailboxes before, not after applying the Transition Pack
(just in case TP fails)
2. Install a second DC (could be a virtual machine), make it a GC and
confirm that it successfully replicated and functions as GC (event ID
1119 and 1869). If the installation of TP fails you will just seize
the FSMO roles and continue working normally.
3. If you are using Sharepoint Services – backup using smigrate (just
in case you need to restore sharepoint services on a new server)
