Re: Backup strategy - looking for opinions

Hi kj,

Thanks for your response. I'm still kinda new to the "business &
regulatory requirements" terms; can you be more specific? We have
about 80GB to back up so far. The best part is that I can simply get
larger storage media without having to replace the drive when our
storage needs grow. When you say 3 backup sets, do you mean 3 tapes?
or say 3 sets of tapes?
very kind regards,

Three sets, no matter how many tapes are required for a "set" to contain the
entire collection of backup data (one daily in your plan). Sets are;

A set is always off site

A set is always on site

A set is either off site, on site, or in tranistion from one place to the
other.

All sets rotate in turn.

Again, that's just my minimum. With backups, more is nearly always better.
( of course you have to keep them secure too)

The business or industry you support often has business or governmental
regulations or acceptted practices on the retension of data. Otherwise, how
much data could the business loose and remain viable?

Hi All,

We're running SBS 2003 R2 w/exchange plus SQL and Web servers joined
to domain.

I'm going to be using Backup Exec for sbs, exchange, & sql. Hardware
will be Dell power vault with 2 media 120/240GB hard drives.

My thought was to run full backups every night and keep the previous
day's media off site. I also thought of doing a differential at 7am
and an 12 noon just for exchange and SQL that would append to the
previous nights backup.
Please give constructive criticism or any additional thoughts to
consider. Thanks alot everyone. I really appreciate the help.

kind regards,
-mike

I'm not one much on differentials or incrementals for that matter.

What are your business & regulatory requirements for backups /
recovery, how much data?

I usualy spec three backup sets minimum.
