RE: SBS backup cannot recognize Ultrium 3 backup device

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you unable to backup SBS
thru SBS backup or NTbackup to your tape. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, the LSI Ultra320 2000 series controller is not in our
HCL list.

As this device is not on the HCL list, the compatibility of this device on
our system is not tested and therefore its performance on the server is not
guaranteed. It is better for you to consult/contact the hardware
manufactory to seek the further support for it.

I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:

1. Try to change the controller with a one in our HCL list to test this
issue.

2. Try to contact the controller vendor to confirm that it is compatibility
with windows server 2003. Meanwhile, get latest driver of it and apply it
to test this issue.

3. Try to run the SBS backup or NTbackup to store the backup in local hard
disk. If the backup success, that means the SBS is running properly.

4. The corrupted RSM database may cause this issue. Let's do the following
steps to reset RSM database.

a. Stopped the RSM Service.
b. Deleted the RSM databases located at %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData.
c. Restarted the RSM Service, this will recreate new, empty RSM Databases,
configure permission on NTMSDATA folder to grant permission to
administrators and system.
d. Put a new tape in, or a tape that may be deleted.
e. Go to the "properties" of the disk inside the physical locations.
Uncheck 'Enable Drive'. Hit apply then check the 'Enable Drive' again (This
was done to reset the Flag since we had renamed the database for RSM)
f. Please test the issue again.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Please send me the backup log files:

a. The Backupxx.log files in the folder ''C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data''.

Note: Before reproduce the problem, please open NTBACKUP, click
"Tools"->"Options" and then check "Detailed" on the "Backup Log" tab. Then
reproduce this issue and send the backup log to me (Tools->Report).

b. The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
''%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs''.

2. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)

On HP ML350 I have installed SBS 2003 R2 SP2. Backup device is external
SCSI
HP StorageWorks 960 connected to single channel controller LSI Ultra320
2000
series. In Device manager I can see that backup device exists, updated
with
latest HP drivers. When I want to setup SBS backup (from system manager),
I
cannot select backup tape (gray) as backup destination. If I start
manually
NT backup, I can select LTO3 as backup destination, but backup will fail
without reporting any error in backup report or bad event log. I have
tested
backup device with another server and it works fine. Backup tapes are used
only once (first 2 weeks backup was successfully finished).
