RE: SBS 2003 Backup Failing

You may want to try a different\new tape...and or clean the drive.

Thanks for that Tami, I'll keep an eye on the Removable Storage Manager and
see if that helps me over the next few days.

Does bother me that it didn't occur for the first 2 backups though, and
there certainly weren't any changes to the system in the intervening 2 days.
Still we'll monitor it and see what transpires.

Thanks for the input Gerard

We have the same issues with tape drives...although blamed on the issue of
using tape drives in the first place...(according to this group its so passe
dont you know)

the tape drives are on the HCL, SBSBackup wont see the media untill you
fiddle with Removable Storage Manager...NTbackup sometimes also has issues
seeing the media.

Everyone seems to think backup to harddrive as a solution....I find I have
other issues using harddrives and media management.

Everyday when I load a new tape in the drive I have to open up Removable
Storage Manager>Libraries>....wait for Removable Storage Manager to see the
drive...as it puts a red mark on it for some reason while the tape is
loading. then I right click on it and mark as clean.

Although I have mentioned this before wondering about maybe a problem with
the Removable Storage Manager and other issues I have experienced with
it...it is continually blamed on the tape drive.

Sorry to say....its good to see someone else with the issue.

I believe it is continued corruption in the removable storage
manager......due to the fact I used an USB drive to backup to for a bit as I
was replacing the drive.

Ever since then...the backup has been inconsistent....on 2 seperate servers
this has happened.

I have tried to reapply patches...but they error our saying I already have
them installed....has to be a mismatched dll and\or SP...thats my hunch.

So the solution is to ditch tape drives altogether...and use USB hardrives

Unless someone has another solution??

We have installed a new IBM HH LTO Gen SCSI Sequential Device Tape Drive into
our SBS2003 SP2 machine along with a Adaptec SCSI 29320LPE U320 PCI-Express
Card. We have utilised the old SBS backup script for the old tape drive (Dat
72), the old drive was replaced as we were running out of capacity.
Everything worked just as it should for the first 2 nights anf then we
started getting the follwoing errors in the tape log;

"Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Hardware failure.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
The operation was ended."

On checking the System log files there is the following entry;

"The device, \Device\Scsi\adpu3201, did not respond within the timeout
period."

Interesting though as I have kicked off 2 manual jobs and they have
completed without any problems.

Also the backup does not stop at the same point, last night it took an hour
before the backup faulted, other times only 30 mins and on a different set,
so there does not seem to be a pattern other than the timeout issue with the
HBA card, last night I changed the SCSI ID on the Tape unit to 0 and also set
the speed rate down to 160 instead of 320, also checked the cable, adapter
and terminator.

The application log also contains the follwoing errors;

"End Backup of 'E:' 'Warnings or errors were encountered.'

Verify: On
Mode: Append
Type: Normal

Consult the backup report for more details."

and

"End Operation: Warnings or errors were encountered.
Consult the backup report for more details."

at this stage I am getting desperate to get a full backup completed so any
suggestions would be most helpful, happy to provide further info. TIA

Here is the complete log for last nights job
