Secondly, as I sit here thinking about it, aside from the VPN having an ip, I cannot see anything on the network, no not a thing, this would be typical in light of what I have described? Perhaps I have something else messed up as well.

Yes, it does. I think people were assuming the remote PC was joined to the domain, and clearly it isn't, as the Home versions cannot be. You cannot make a domain logon from a Vista or XP Home machine. It's possible to connect by VPN, even from a non-Windows machine.
It is possible to access some resources from a non-domain machine, but credentials will need to be entered with every request. Possibly some resources will not be available at all. The web services will be available. I've found network browsing from a non-domain machine to be a bit intermittent.
