Re: Basic WINS config.

Steve:

I created a WINS Proxy on the workgroup subnet. That is the subnet without
the SBS server. I can ping any machine, by Netbios name, from the workgroup
to the domain. But not the other way around. I can only ping the WINS Proxy.
(Firewalls off)

The Proxy has the IP address of the SBS server in the TCP/IP config WINS tab.

Only thing odd I see is "unknown" in Node Type on the proxy. I studied the
MS article on it. The value is correct.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310570. Any ideas?

One other question: is there anyway to make all computers appear in Network
Places/Windows Explorer beside using the modified b-node?

Thanks

Configure the computers on the VPN subnet to use the domain controller as
their WINS server. Many routers let you specify the IP of a WINS server in
the DHCP properties. Also a WINS proxy may be of help.

I have a Domain Controller in subnet 192.168.0.0. I have a workgroup
connected to the network via a VPN on subnet 192.168.1.0.

The workgroup is getting DHCP and DNS servcies from a router. Not the
server. I would like to use WINS to get Name Resolution from the workgroup
so
I can manage it better - have the workgroup appear in Network Browsing
etc.

How do I add that subnet to WINS? (The router does have the abiltity to
pass
Netbios traffic, but I read in a MS article that this was not recommened.
So
I turned it off.)

I have SBS 2003 Premium SP1.
