Re: Internet Connectivity Issues

haven't looked at other issues but 'telnet public_IP' _should fail, hence
"Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed".

'telnet public_IP 25' (ie. telling telnet to use port 25) should connect to
your SMTP server.

Hi Dave,

When trying to RDP to the Server it just sorts of times out, because there
is no reponse. You get your common "The client could not connect to the
remote computer." message. If you were to ping the IP from the Internet
you
get "Request timed out." If I try to email the server from an external
e-mail
account its just never received. When attempting to telnet to it you get
"Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed"

In addition all services are running as should be and after fixing the DNS
all clients get connected to the Internet, therefore indicating that the
Internet is OK. There are no warnings in the System or Application log.

I think that it might be a client PC or DOS attack since all of the above
checks out and when I forcefully break and reestablish the Internet
connection everything works OK for an indefinite period of time.

Do you think that it might be something else? Is there any free tool out
there that can help me eliminate my suspision of a client PC or DOS
attack?
If it is a DOS attack how can I take care of it?

I appreciate your time and any leads that can help me resolve this issue.

The DNS settings you're referring to effect outbound traffic such as web
browsing. The use of forwarders or the configuration of the DNS on your
SBS
should not have anything to do with an inbound RDP failure. I recommend
leaving the DNS as configured by the CEICW (the Connect to Internet
wizard
on the SBS Console's To Do list). You could run that again anyway just
to
verify that everything is correctly configured.

When you try to connect to the server remotely using RDP, specifically
what
happens when it fails? Is anything logged in the event logs of the
remote
PC or the SBS?

When you attempt to e-mail your business alias from an external account,
what's the result? If you try to telnet to your SBS from an external PC,
what's the response?

Are all services running that should be? Do you have normal Internet
access
from your SBS and client PCs (after fixing the DNS)? Any noteworthy
errors
or warnings in the System or Application log on the SBS?

Why do you think a client PC or DOS attack? You could try shutting down
the
client PCs one at a time to see if the situation changes or improves.

We are experiencing Internet connectivity Issues and I believe that it
may
be
because of an internal machine or a denial of service attack. When the
problem occurred I went ahead and changed my DNS to point to an ISP DNS
instead of my server and that seemed to work. However, I can get to
the
Internet, but my e-mail traffic was not coming in nor could I access
RDP
into
the server from the Internet? Can anyone please help me isolate the
problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
