can you telnet to the external nic on port 25 when you are outside the local area network?

I have two nics. I can telnet to port 25 on the internal nic, but not on the
external nic. On the internal nic I am on their ip schema to connect. Also
on the ip schema of the external nic to test that.
I've run the email/internet connection wizard, but that has not fixed it.
Firewall setting shows email open, but I'm wondering if the consultant before
me did some customization to block this.
FYI, we are moving to have out email directly sent to our server, instead of
picking it up via a pop3 server at our web host.
Any direction appreciated.
