Hello Richard,
Thank you for your update.
This is really a strange issue. I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:
1. This issue may cause by SMTP Virtual Server Fully-qualified domain name customization. I suggest you run the CEICW on SBS to
reconfigure the Exchange:
Go through the follow KB and Rerun CEICW again carefully.
How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us
Detailed steps for your reference:
a. Open Server Management.
b. Click To Do List.
c. Click Connect to the Internet.
d. Proceed to the "Firewall" page and select "Enable Firewall".
e. On the "Services Configuration" page, make sure that "E-mail" service has been checked.
f. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, check the web services that you want to publish.
g. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose "Create a new Web server certificate" and key in your public domain name in the box.
h. On the "Internet E-mail" page, choose "Enable Internet e-mail".
i. On the "E-mail Delivery Method" page, Smart Host (Forward all e-mail to e-mail server at your ISP) to route your email, you need to input
the IP address of your smart host.
j. If you're using POP3 connector, please enable POP3 Connector.
k. Key in your e-mail domain name in "Email Domain Name" page. (the domain name behind the '@' of your email address, like
"rogers.com")
l. Finish the wizard.
2. Disable Archiving of Exchange:
a. Go to Exchange System manager
b. The properties of "Mailbox Store" under the First Storage Group
c. General Tab
d. Unchecked the "Archive all messages sent or received by mailboxes on this store" checkbox with the Administrator marked as the
default account.
3. From the application log, I find many 7006. I think this is a credentials issue. I think your ISP may change their smarthost authentication
method. I suggest you contact your smarthost provider to confirm how to configure the SMTP connector on your SBS.

| Thanks for the replies everyone.
|
| Terence, I followed the suggestions but to no avail and the problem still
| exists. We cannot do DNS resolution but instead have to use smarthost
| because the ISP has port 25 outbound locked down. I ran the MPSRPT and
| emailed you the results and .msg file as requested.
|
| Leon, I think you are onto something. I can manually telnet to the
| Rogers.com SMTP host and process the AUTH command and it will only accept
| Base64 encoding of the username and password.
|
| Can the default Windows SMTP server support Base64 encoding in the AUTH
| directive?
