2) No applications need to be run over the remote connection, so TS should
not be needed. Just file and print sharing. It is for an accounting firm,
where the remote user will mostly need to access files stored on the LAN and
also send print jobs to one or more printers in the office.
Actually, you just named several applications that run over the VPN if
you go that route:
Word, Excel, Accounting program, etc...
Excel and Accounting programs are very susceptible to file corruption
due to a bad network connection. Internet connections are problematic
enough, add a VPN and a long open file and you've got disaster just
waiting to happen.
There is also the issue of speed, most people don't have a 2MBPS
outbound connection for their office, they have less than 1MBPS in many
cases, which makes FILE Sharing a PITA and it takes a LONG time.
A PC without keyboard or mouse or monitor can sit under a desk, on top
the server, etc... you can use a KVM type switch to share the servers
monitor/kbd/mouse....
With the VPN you will have a LOT more problems than if you just bought a
cheap PC and used it - the PC will most likely save you money the first
year.
