How to secure backups?

Using SBS 2003.
We are using Windows Backup to do nightly backups to an external drive. How can I either encrypt or basically make sure if found, someone else can't simply connect this drive and get all of the information from it?

Whatever you do just be sure that when your building goes up in flames and you need your backup, that the security you've put in place doesn't prevent you from accessing your own data. ...
