Re: Read Only Shares

Hmmm... By default, all new shares on the SBS server will be "read only"
unless you modify the NTFS (security) permissions on the share. Not sure
why this would be affected joining the Win2K3 server to the domain.

You have two types of permissions and both need to be set properly to gain
access to the share and to be able to write to it and it's subfolders/files:

Share Permissions
Security (NTFS) Permissions

If you rt. click on the root of the E: drive, then | Properties | Security
tab,

for Users (<yourdomain>\Users), the NTFS permissions should be:

Read & Execute (allow)
List Folder contents (allow)
Read (allow)
Special Permissions (allow checked and both boxes greyed out)

All new shares on SBS 2003 R2 server are now Read Only. I created new
shares
and all these shares are Read Only. This did not happen until I joined the
Windows 2003 standard Server to the SBS Domain using the connect computer
wizard for in Manage Your Server. I need help.

Inherited Rights? Did you untick the box to inherit, and tick the box to
apply to sub folders?

I have taken ownership of all files and when I uncheck Read Only the
dialog
box opens and changes permissions but when I go back to the folder the
Read
only checkbox is still checked. Even if I move the folder to a differnt
partition on a different system the files are still read only. I do not
understand what is happening other than a GPO which I do not know which
one
can be applying the Read Only status.

I joined an existing Windows Server 2003 Standard server to my SBS
2003
Domain (new) for Application Terminal Service needs. After joining
the
domain
everything on E: (data) changed to Read Only so anyone trying to
save
work
fails. I brought the shares over from the existing Windows 2003
server
to
my
new SBS 2003 R2 server but I cannot take off the Read Only status on
either
server no matter what I try. Any help in this would be appreciated
as
users
have to redo all their work.
