Re: Website Error Code 403 Forbidden

Hmmmm... seems to me that what should happen is that you should use the ip
address of the SBS, as you have suggested, and use the router and an ISA
rule to forward the requests on port 80 to the ip of the SBS.

However, let me be the first to say (in this thread), that while this might
be an interesting learning experience, you are chasing your tail, as you
should not do this on a production server. Website hosting is so close to
free that it is not worth the risk to a production server.

Good luck with your project.

Hi everyone,
Forgive me if I've posted this message in the wrong newsgroup but the
problem really touches on a few different technologies so I wasn't sure
where to post it, but SBS 2003 is where the problem begins so I'll try this
newsgroup first.

I've set up SBS 2003 in a test environemnt really for my own benefit to
learn more about the OS and delve deeper under the hood but I'm having
problems hosting an internal website for external Internet visitors to view,
now I know this isn't really the right thing to do and pureists will no
doubt tell me I shouldn't host a website on an SBS box, but this is purely a
learning exercise and if we could keep any help or suggestions pertenant to
the problem I would be very grateful.

To the best of my knowledge I have set up and configured the Internet and
Email Connection okay, in fact I can browse the Internet and access the
internal website without any problems. I've set up a new external website in
IIS and I believe I've set the permissions properly, I've also added that
website to DNS with the correct external static IP provided by my ISP but
when I try to access the site from either a PC on my internal network, or a
machine outside of my network, the website displays the following error
message:

The Page cannot be displayed

Error code: 403 Forbidden. The server denied the specified Uniform Resource
Locator (URL). Contact the server administrator. (12202)

I also have ISA Server 2004 installed on the SBS box and this could be where
the problem lies, my knowledge of ISA is very limited but I've configured a
Firewall rule to allow external traffic to this website, but that hasn't
worked. I know it's possible to host a website on the SBS box because I have
already done it previously but I had a serious hard drive issue so I
replaced the drive and reinstalled SBS 2003, the only difference between
that installation and this one now is I have ISA Server installed but I
didn't have that installed in the old configuration, which obviously leads
me to think it may be a problem with the ISA configuration.

One other really important point that am sure could be causing the problem
is within IIS; as I said this problem does touch on a few different
technologies - when I open up IIS and navigate to the websites, I have the
following sites listed along with their respective IP addresses:

Default website 192.168.16.2
Microsoft SharePoint Administration *All Unassigned*
SharePoint Central Administration *All Unassigned*
companyweb 192.168.16.2
Hosted External Website 86.71.*.*

The 'Hosted External Website', the one I'm having the problems with shows as
(Stopped) in IIS, when I try and start the site it automatically stops
again. The only way I can keep the site Running is by changing the IP
address to the internal IP address of the server (192.168.16.2) but that
defeats the object as I won't then be able to broadcast the website to the
wider Internet community. I have no idea why the site won't 'Start' with an
external IP address and I feel sure this could be where the problem lies.

I appreciate this could be a little complicated if you're not sitting in
front of the server but I've tried my best to give as much detail as I can
and if anyone can offer any help, pointers or suggestions I would of course
be very grateful.

Kind Regards,
Wayne
